District Conference 2023

Rotary District 1190 Conference was held at Barton Manor Hotel on 18th March, amongst the attendees were 6 Rotarians & 1 guest from Blackpool Palatine Rotary.

The Conference this year focused on Youth with delegates listening to numerous Guest Speakers with entertainment also provided.
Some of the topics discussed were hard hitting, emotional &  inspirational.
First on the podium to speak was Ed Sherry OBE, retiring in 2013 as Chief Inspector .  He went on to develop a standardised framework for the operation of Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) giving practical support & guidance to cadet units. Many members of these cadet units, around 25%, coming from crime vulnerable or personally challenging backgrounds. Over 11,000 young people are now, across the country, in these Voluntary Police Cadets Units. One of these units, Blackpool, then gave a short presentation.
Amongst other speakers was Colonel Peter McCall, elected as Police &  Crime Commissioner of Cumbria Constabularly in 2016 & again in May 2021.
High Sheriff of Cumbria, Alan McViety.
Tim Mann MBE in his role as partnerships, projects & training lead with National Volunteer Police Cadets. He supports  & spoke about the Breck Foundation which was founded in 2014 in response to the tragic loss of Breck Bednar, a 14 year old boy who was groomed & murdered by someone he met online. I think all Rotarians eyes were opened to what the dangers can be on the internet.
Jean Best, Peace Officer for Rotary District 1020, developed Peace Project to enable young people to develop skills to help them conquer conflict in their lives.
Dave Higham, an ex offender, created The Well. David had been in & out of prison since the age of 16 & was a drug user for over 25 years. After receiving intensive support whilst serving time in Lancaster Castle prison, & , being clean for over 11 years, he set up The Well in 2012, which now has four sites in Lancashire & Cumbria. The Well reflects David's vision of what recovery services should look like - inclusive , non- judgemental, inspirational
& effective.
Closing the Conference where two young sisters living in Carnforth whose parents were both medical retired from the Armed Forces. Having appeared on The Voice Kids over Christmas, mentored by & sang with will.i.am.
Just a few weeks ago, in February,  they also starred on Michael McIntyres Big Show. A lovely end to a good day.
