Handover Meeting on 28th February

After an interesting visit to the Port of Dover it was time for an evening meal of the usual high standard at the Marina Hotel, followed by the change of President from John Dunkley to Peter West.

In his report on the last 4 months John said that it had been a busy and productive time.  For community service we had collected £2,600 for the Royal British Legion, presented environmental books to Guston Primary School, and funded an Environmental Presentation to the school which will be happening soon.

Nine out of thirteen clubs attended the meeting of the Rotary Clubs of the Cinque Ports in November, with 60 people hearing the presentation from Hayley Cook, the speaker from Headstart, who gave us an insight into the effects of brain trauma.  The raffle also raised over £200 for Foundation.

In January our speaker was Cliff Grieve who gave a detailed and quite frightening presentation on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking which is happening even here in the UK, with many people unaware that it is going on.

On 14th February Mark Underwood, the District Membership Lead, came to a meeting of the four local Rotary Clubs and spoke in general about membership and in particular about the North Star Project which gives ideas about encouraging membership in different ways.

The Shuffleboard Evening at St Margaret’s Village Hall in November was attended by a near capacity crowd.  It was a very enjoyable evening which raised just over £1,000 which was divided between the End Polio Now Campaign and local charities.

We held our Christmas dinner here at the Marina Hotel, and then there was the enjoyable and unique Christmas Celebration at St Mary in Castro.  We took the lead in this event which was organised by our Assistant Governor with most of the clubs in our cluster taking part.  Nearly £900 was raised for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.

Our Christmas collection at Morrisons added over £200 to our funds.

As well as carrying out community service we have enjoyed ourselves, which is important.

Thanks to all those who have helped organise these events and to all members who have supported them.  This shows that even with a small number of members, many of us not in the prime of youth, we can still contribute to our community and enjoy our Rotary life.
