AMU/GIESSEN TWINNING WEEKEND IN CHICHESTER

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Friday, 14^th June:  Afternoon

FISHBOURNE ROMAN PALACE

No visit to Chichester (Noviomagus Reginorum) is complete without coming to see Fishbourne Palace, the largest Roman residence in Britain.  It was originally constructed in AD75 and lay buried until discovered by workmen laying pipes in the 1960s.  The excavated palace boasts some of the best mosaics in the country.

Evening:  Welcome Barbecue at Avisford Park Hotel

Saturday, 15^th June:  Morning

GUIDED WALK AROUND CHICHESTER

This tour takes in the main historical sites of the city including its Roman heritage, the cathedral and the associated buildings, the Georgian quarter in the south-eastern part of the city; then on to East Street and the remains of the Norman conquest, finishing finally in North Street with the civic centre and Market Cross dating back to 1500.  Our qualified tourist guide for this walk is Craig Gershater, who is also the current Mayor of Chichester!

Saturday, 15^th June:  Lunch and afternoon:

BOAT TOUR OF CHICHESTER HARBOUR

All aboard the Solar Heritage!  Enjoy this tour on Chichester Harbour Conservancy’s solar-powered catamaran.  This boat is virtually silent and is a great way to visit the Harbour (a designated National Landscape) and learn more about the wildlife and history of this special place.  PACKED LUNCH INCLUDED.

Saturday, 15^th June:  Early Evening:

WINE TASTING AT TINWOOD

Established in 2007, Tinwood Estate is owned by the Tukker family and is situated on the edge of the South Downs.  They grow high-quality grapes that produce award-winning English sparkling wines from Sussex crafted using the traditional method.  After a tour of the vines, you can then relax in the tasting room to enjoy the three English sparkling wines made in Sussex with a laid-back tutored wine tasting.

Evening:  Dinner at the Avisford Park Hotel

Sunday, 16^th June:  Morning

TOUR OF ARUNDEL CASTLE AND GARDENS

With 1,000 years of history and overlooking the River Arun, this Castle is the seat of the Duke of Norfolk who is also the Earl Marshal of England, a family title held for over 500 years.  The castle has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for over 850 years.  Inside you will see fascinating furniture, tapestries, and a rare collection of paintings by renowned artists including Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Canaletto.  Stroll through the tranquil grounds where you will discover the inspiring Italianate gardens.  You can read more of the Castle’s history on www.arundelcastle.org/castle-history.
