Rotary: Helping to Protect the Environment
Rotary clubs are well known for their work in helping the environment, with projects such as litter picking and beach cleaning.
Peter Sherred, a member of the Rotary Club of South Foreland, recently spent a morning litter picking in Pineham Road between Whitfield and Guston. Many people are concerned about the amount of litter found along our roads and lanes and some collect litter in their locality on a regular basis. A number of people stopped in their cars to offer thanks to Peter for his litter picking exercise.
While litter may seem a minor problem when considering the effects of global warming, it is symptomatic of a society where waste disposal is not adequately dealt with. Fly-tipping and disposal of untreated sewage into rivers or the sea, for example, have become urgent problems that harm the environment.
Rotary clubs are part of a national and international organisation which supports important issues confronting our world. Apart from protecting the environment it promotes peace, fights disease, provides clean water, saves mothers and children, supports education and grows local economies.
The Rotary Club of South Foreland’s Environmental Newsletter appears on this website every two months.
