The Engineering Club was founded twelve years ago by the late Rotarian Dereck Higbee.
Each year, some thirty Year 6 pupils are provided with the opportunity to attend the after-school club and develop their initial engineering skills. Parents pay a small sum towards the cost of the club, the Rotary Club of Ringwood raises external sponsorship in order to provide additional funding for the Club’s activities.
This year, sponsorship has been obtained from a major Ringwood employer – Armfield Limited.
When presenting the cheque Andy said “Recruiting into engineering is very difficult so starting engineering principles as an early stage is extremely important. Armfield is pleased to be supporting the development of these future potential engineers.”
Eleven pupils each term have the opportunity to attend the after-school club. The club is run by Graham Chant, Deryck Burton and Macolm Batt – all retired engineers. The pupils start by learning basic soldering skills through the making of a wire man. They then move on to make a LED Christmas Tree and use their new skills to produce FM radios and remote-controlled cars.
