Rotary Club Lunch Meeting

Fri, May 8th 2015 at 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm

Though there was no formal after lunch speaker today, as it was be the 70th anniversary of VE Day, some of our older members shared their memories of the day.

Rotarian Peter Masterman introduced the session and showed us items that he had brought, including a photograph of him as a young airman -  a likeness that even his own grandchildren did not recognise!

He also came suitably attired for the occasion, wearing odd socks: one bearing pictures of Spitfires and the other, emblems of the Union Jack!

Peter gave us some of his recollections of VE day (he was only ten at the time)

Among the items on display was a painting of Past President John Gillespie as a young soldier in uniform.

Both John Gillespie and Harold Robson gave personal accounts of their wartime experiences around VE Day. For those members who were not present and did not have the opprtunity of hearing these recollections, the talks have been recorded and the file of the recording may be accessed via this link. Selecting this should bring up a page on the file sharing site, "Dropbox"; if you select the file, depending on the media player you have on your computer, you should be able to listen to the talks. My apologies for the background noise at the beginning of the talks, which was due to me positioning the recording device. A CD of the talks is available on request from the webmaster.
