International Annual Quiz - St Laurence Hall Upminster

The Annual Hornchurch and Upminster Rotary Quiz was held in the St. Lawrence Church Hall on Saturday 19th. March.

This year the proceeds of the event, which is organised by the International Committee , was in aid of the Jaipur Limb Centre which is also known as Jaipur Foot. Past President Dr. Subash Hora who is a great supporter of Jaiper Foot gave us a short talk about the centre before the quiz began.

The quiz was well attended and Quiz Master Ian Burns was his usual chirpy and amusing self and the food was, as usual, most tasty.

At the end of the keenly contested quiz the winning table was presented with The Eddie Truman Trophy by President Geoff Furzland.

Special thanks go to the International Committee and in particular David Fell and John Kent for all their hard work and effort which goes into organising this special event.

Jaipur Foot  or Jaipur artificial Limb Centre and the original Name is  The Bhagwal Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti(BMVSS)

The Jaipur Limb Centre is a secular,non-religious,non-governmental,non-political,non-sectoria,non-regional and non-profit organisation set to help the physically challenged, particularly the financially weak and underprivileged.

The society was born of a traumatic incident in the life of Dr.Mehta, the founder and chief Patron of Jaipur Foot.

He met with a life –threatening road accident that crushed one of his legs.Doctors felt that it might  have to be amputated. Both his life and limb were saved. This made this gentleman realise the problems that disabled have to face, particularly the underprivileged, to get artificial limbs.

The Jaipur Foot organisation was thus born on the hospital bed which Dr.Mehta occupied for five months. He finally set up Artificial Limb Centre (BMVSS) in 1975,with  a focus on the poor.

From its birth in Jaipur  Jaipur Foot has grown to span-India and International organisation.

It has 22 branches  in India. And 25 branches all over the World

In the first 7 years after the development of Jaipur Foot hardly 50 limbs were fitted.59 limbs in 1975 when the Society was formed. Now the limbs fitted every year is approaching more than 16,000 +.

Over 1.3 million limbs have been fitted so far.

Meeting Thursday 24th March 2016
John Kent announced at our (above) meeting that last week’s Quiz raised £842 which will go to the Jaipur limb centre in India. As this announcement was being warmly congratulated Rotarian Dr. Subash Hora took the floor and said that as he had promised to match anything that we raised he was pleased to present the club with another cheque for the same amount. This personal generosity is to be greatly admired and he was congratulated equally warmly by those members and guests present, as shown in the one minute video below:-
