Speaker & Meal - Volunteer Uganda.
"My name is Dr Samantha Nightingale and I am usually resident in Longstanton, just outside Cambridge. I am an alumni of Queens College having undertaken my PhD in Biochemistry at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology quite a few years ago now! Since then I have worked in the local government, health, community, education and charity sectors within Cambridge. But I am currently half way through a two year project in south west rural Uganda.
I am the Development Manager for an education based UK social enterprise called Volunteer Uganda and I am also management support at our local college which recently became the first rural university in Uganda. At the University I project managed the completion and opening of a Science Education Faculty to train local people to be inspiring science teachers which in the long term we hope will help engage more young people in science as we need more doctors, nurses, engineers etc.
In this little corner of Uganda there is an active Rotary Club that meets where I live and I have been along to many of their meetings. I am inspired by the work that they aim to do with so little resource and it has motivated me to contact Rotary clubs near where I live. One day, when I return to the UK I aim to join Rotary and in the meantime I would love to come and tell you about the community I live in and the work I am doing. Is there a space in your busy programme to fit me in – I will be able to present some slides and talk about life out here if you are interested in hearing about it."
The main meeting will be followed by a Council Meeting.
