Today Professor Paul Cartledge will speak on -

'Democracy Ancient and Modern' - 'Ten Things You Really Ought to Know about Democracy in Ancient Greece'.

Our English word 'democracy' is derived directly from the ancient Greek word demokratia, but the ancient Greeks managed their democratic politics very differently from ours. In fact an ancient Greek democrat would probably call our democracy an 'oligarchy' (rule by a few).

This talk by the recently retired Cambridge professor of ancient Greek culture, based on his recent book "Democracy - A Life" (Oxford University Press, March 2016),  will focus on some of the key features differentiating all ancient Greek democracies from all modern ones.
