Jun 2016 Castle Hill Tour, Cambridge with County Archeologist

A free open-air 1 hour tour of the historic area of the Cambridge Castle Mound.

Today we are very lucky to have booked Quentin Carroll, the County Archeologist. He is very knowledgeable about the Castle Mound area and brings its history to life. There is a climb to the top of the mound but otherwise the going is easy. Cambridge City began around the mound and only later expanded across the river. The different roles of the area over the last 2000 years is fascinating. Before the Romans this crossing point on the river was very popular. The first wooden castle built the mound for William the Conqueror and it went through several stone revamps before being demolished to build a prison. Some of the prison bricks are now in the Shire Hall and the Wardens House is still there!
