Rotary Club Lunch Meeting

Fri, Aug 26th 2016 at 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm

We meet as usual for lunch at 12.45pm. Our speaker will be Olwen Sheldon, who is a volunteer with Macmillan Cancer Support and will speak about that organisation.

President Jo has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as the main charity that will be supported by our Cub in her Presidential Year.

Macmillan Cancer Support can trace its history back to the early years of the last century when Douglas Macmillan used his £10 inheritance to found the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer in 1911. The organisation has now grown to a major provider of support for cancer sufferers. By 2012 over 5.7 million people benefitted from the services they provide and their very popular "Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning" event, which raises millions of pounds each year.

There are 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK today, and as more people live longer with their cancer, this number is set to grow to 4 million by 2030. The stated ambition of Macmillan Cancer Support is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and to inspire millions of others to do the same.
