Helen Gilmore - Kirkliston Gala day.

Raffle - Gordon McInally.

Reception - Ed Kelly / Jim McCulloch

On Thursday 29th September the Rotary Club of South Queensferry enjoyed a talk from Helen Gilmore, the new chair of Kirkliston Gala Committee. Kirkliston Gala Week costs around £16K per year and Helen gave a comprehensive review of fundraising activities. Although contributors include Edinburgh Airport and local business sponsors, the committee also relies on the proceeds of fundraising events organised by a vast network of helpers. She also touched on the input of the schools and how the Gala Queen and her court are chosen every year. The ever increasing population of Kirkliston brings its own challenge. At events like the Halloween Fundraiser, tickets have to be sold on a first come basis due to lack of suitable venues. Rotarian David Buchanan offered use of the Kirkliston Church Hall if it would help. Helen thanked the club for its assistance in providing marquees and stewarding for the Gala Day. She joked than many new residents thought the council did all the work, unaware of the year-long efforts of a host of volunteers.

Helen's presentation was well received by the club members and prompted many questions from the floor.
