Speaker Evening

Thu, Sep 26th 2019 at 6:45 pm - 8:45 pm

Speaker - Catherine Walker, Curator of the War Poets collection at Napier University's Craiglockhart Campus.
Raffle - Sandy Mackenzie
Reception - Drew Graham / Gerald Smith

Catherine Walker MBE was the speaker at the Rotary Club of South Queensferry on Thursday 26th September. Her subject was Craiglockart and the War Poets. For over twenty years Catherine has developed and promoted a collection of writings and artefacts concerning the history of Napier University's Craiglockart Campus which, as Craiglockart Hospital, served as a hydropathic spa and hospital for officers with shell-shock during the First World War. The War Poets Collection celebrates the meeting and work of Great War poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon who met while being treated at Craiglockart. Thanks to Catherine's enthusiasm the collection has grown to become a unique resource, offering an insight on this little-known aspect of war through the words and memories of patients, medical staff and relatives. Catherine Walker's fascinating talk was warmly received and prompted many questions from the floor.
