Grant to Carers Link

Report on use of grant to Carers Link in support of work with young carers in Milngavie and Bearsden.

When Rotary District Scotland South was created by the merging of the two districts coevering west, south and east Scotland a fund was set aside to be used by the clubs from the old west district D1230.  This allocated £250 to each club to be used for a good cause in their area with the proviso that the club at least matched the amount from the district fund.

After discussion and consultation with Carers Link a project was agreed that would provide some funding to support the work with Young Carers in Allander Rotary's area.  The following is a brief report on the activities that were supported. A positive outcome from the use of the funds.

Carers Link Wellbeing Project for Young Carers in Milngavie and Bearsden

There was a small change due to various reasons in the original planned funding use. However, we successfully achieved the primary goal of providing young carers with opportunities to enjoy themselves and connect with peers in similar situations.

Allander Rotary matched the D1230 fund of £250 and increased it to a total of £605. Carers Link, who recently faced funding cuts, gratefully received this donation. The funds supported holiday activities for young carers during the February half-term and April Easter holidays, covering various activities and catering costs, including popcorn at the cinema. The activities funded and number of young carers attending each activity were

Ten Pin Bowling (Kirkintilloch)

LaserStation (Braehead)

Odeon Cinema (Minecraft Movie)

The following comments are from the online survey that the organisation conducts to get feedback from young carers attending activities.  These show a very positive outcome from the events that Rotary funded.

“It was good to go out and have fun without my brothers being there making things difficult”

“I enjoyed it because I was really looking forward to the movie and they payed for popcorn and soda”

“I love going to young carers. I really enjoy meeting other young carers but with all the cuts I don't think I’m getting enough time to chat to the group anymore. I loved the day at laser quest and the staff are great but just wish there was more times like yesterday and maybe a bit longer”

“I get to be around other people who get me. The staff are so caring and welcoming. Young Carers is something I'm so pleased to be part of, they let me switch off and get a break from stress.”
