Allander applied for a District Grant from Rotary Foundation (Rotary's Charity) for 2024/25. We applied for the maximum grant of £1500 and were awarded £1050 that we had to at least match. There were two parts to the grant, one of which was to fund a pupil at Bright Futures High School The second, covered in separate post, was to fund the procurement of saplings and solar pumps.
All of this being done as part of our support to Changing Lives Malawi (CLM), a charity based in Balfron that is working in the Chambo area of Northern Malawi. This is an area where most other charities do not work and where the aim is to improve lives and establish long term self-sufficiency.
In Malawi Secondary Education must be paid for and many families cannot afford this. Hence, the need for sponsorship. Secondary education is for 4 years and during this national certification can be achieved to help the scholars find jobs and/or progress to higher education.
It costs £25 a month to sponsor a student.
Sponsoring a child means they will have hope. They know someone cares about them. They have a brighter future. Sponsored children continue to have access to the feeding programme and they get a monthly food parcel and soap for their family. This isn’t enough for the whole month but will help supplement their diet. CLM want to give people the helping hand they need but not to become totally reliant on food parcels. They would love to be self-sufficient and that is the aim too.
A sponsored child gets new clothes, a blanket, soap and stationery supplies for school. When at Bright Futures Secondary School, their fees are paid, uniform bought and any other supplies they need as well as free nutritious school lunches, for most their only meal of the day.
Myless started secondary school in September 2025. You may have spotted that she is 20 and thinking that's quite old for starting secondary school. Many pupils, for a range of reasons, are not able to attend school year in year out and can be teenagers when they finish primary school. Being able to afford secondary education and family support demands often cause delays in getting educated. You will see in the attached note written by Myless that she wants to be a nurse and hopefully after finishing her 4 years at High School she will be able to go onto do this.
