Rotary Foundation Grant for Malawi

A Rotary Foundation District Grant is helping educate and make a school and community in Northern Malawi self sufficient. This work is being done with local charity Changing Lives Malawi to achieve this.

Allander applied for a District Grant from Rotary Foundation for 2024/25. We requested £1500 and received £1050, which we had to match. Through various fundraising efforts, Allander not only matched but exceeded the amount, raising a total of £2455 for Changing Lives Malawi. The grant had two parts: funding a pupil at Bright Futures High School and supporting agricultural education to make the community self-sufficient. This post provides more details.

Water Pumps

The procurement of two solar powered pumps plus piping will enable water to be taken from the nearby river to the orchards.  The often limited availability of fuel and its rising cost means that solar pumps will be ideal and give flexibility in exactly where the pumps can be used.  The pumps come with 10 year support so will give long term use for minimum cost.

Saplings

Providing young fruit plants and gardening tools allows pupils to learn planting and maintenance skills. The pupils prepare the ground and plant the trees as part of their education. Photos show pupils planting the trees. The goal is to help the school and foundation move towards self-sufficiency. This effort complements other initiatives like raising chickens for eggs. Additionally, planting helps stabilize the ground and prevent erosion.

Bright Futures Secondary School provides practical agricultural lessons that benefit students immediately. All students, including those at Bright Futures Nursery, will soon share the fruit from these trees. This currently supports about 130 children and young people, a number expected to grow with the addition of a fourth year of students next year.

Changing Lives Malawi (CLM) is our direct partner in this project. They maintain the working relationship and financial influence with the in-country organization. Our main points of contact are the principal fundraiser and another director. None of the directors or Scottish volunteers receive payment.

The organization in northern Malawi is the William Stewart Foundation, located near the town of Chitipa, in the village of Ibuluma. Chitipa District is the northernmost district in the Northern Region of Malawi. They manage all local activities and employ the staff at Bright Futures Secondary School. The primary contact in Malawi is Levison Mlambya, who is the Director of Bright Futures Secondary School.

Rotary Foundation Grants

The Rotary Foundation, Rotary's charity, envisions a better world. Annually, it distributes hundreds of millions in grants to global Rotary Clubs for humanitarian projects, vocational training, and scholarships. These grants, from small to large international efforts, strengthen partnerships and offer sustainable, measurable community benefits. Thousands of projects receive support from The Rotary Foundation each year.
