On 8th June the club held its President’s annual lunch at Kendleshire Golf Club. Over 40 members and guests attended to mark the end of Ian Hodgson’s year as President.
At our business meeting on 2nd June, we were joined by the Rotary District Governor elect, Anne Bartholomew, who acknowledged the very active and successful year the club has had, whilst increasing its membership when many other clubs are experiencing dwindling numbers. We were also joined by Rotarian Ken Kinsey, a member of a very large club in the state of Iowa, USA (see photo).
At the same meeting the club approved a significant donation to the Alzheimer’s Society, made possible by the generous collections from attendees at the latest season of tea dances in the town hall. The club also made a donation to St John’s Mead PTA to contribute to a project to improve the school’s play equipment, especially the trim trail. On 11th June, our club once more supported the annual Rotary ‘Kids Out’ event at Cattle Country Park, Berkeley, where 470 students with learning difficulties gathered for a day of fun in the sunshine. The club was delighted to invite 18 students and teaching staff from Culverhill School in Yate wearing the t shirts funded by the club. Four members of our club were present to help on the day. On the international front the club agreed a financial pledge to a Rotary Global Grant initiative led by the Hereford City Rotary Club to improve and extend the capacity of a small hospice in Nepal.
At a recent meeting club members enjoyed an informative presentation from Andy Reynolds from Airbus UK who described the research underway in pursuit of the first zero emissions propeller driven commercial aircraft by 2035.
Several club members acted as volunteers at the recent and highly successful ‘Good Times’ music and comedy event on the Ridings supported by some 20,000 people who attended to enjoy a variety of acts over a six-day period.
Finally, club members continue to support the activities of the PhysioNet charity and those of the Upper Frome Friends Group.
