Some examples of some of the projects we sponsor are below
Each year we sponsor two 16 to 18-year-old students from Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green schools, to attend a week-long residential course in the Forest of Dean to build leadership skills - it will prove to be the most exciting and rewarding week of their young lives.
Managed by a team of professional instructors, the participants join 40 other students from our Rotary District to tackle physical and mental exercises which will challenge and build their leadership and communication skills, develop their self-esteem and confidence.
They develop firm friendships, overcome inhibitions and have tremendous fun!
The Rotary Young Innovator Competition is held annually at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall in June or July. It is for 15 to 17-year olds from the local schools. The aim is to encourage students to introduce innovation into a number of subjects, including product design, textiles and graphics.
Each year around 60 students enter and present their school projects which represent two years of hard work by the young people, with the support of the school staff. They receive positive feedback and prizes from the professional judges, who come from our generous sponsors, Renishaw and Hanson.
Rotary is extremely grateful for the assistance of Inner Wheel members who provided welcome refreshment for students, judges and spectators.
This email was received from a participating teacher: “Please convey my thanks on behalf of the school to your colleagues in the Rotary Club for organising yesterday’s event. As always, the students gain considerable benefit from presenting their work formally to other people. I believe that this is a most worthwhile and beneficial experience. As always your continued support is very much appreciated.”
We continued to support the Green Power project at Chipping Sodbury School and, in particular, the Rotary Racer car. What began as an initiative at Chipping Sodbury School to get 'Lads and Dads' working together now involves girl and boy students and a diverse range of family members working to build electric powered cars to race at circuits around the country.
The Greenpower project gets children from 11 onwards interested in engineering and the environment. It makes learning about science fun and enables skills and knowledge to be developed on a practical project. And of course, it also builds teamwork. Many students go on to engineering graduate courses.
The Chipping Sodbury School Rotary Racer has had great success over many years of competition.
We support a ‘Young Chef’ competition at both Chipping Sodbury and Brimsham Green schools. The students prepare and present a meal, which is judged by Ann Murray, from local cooking school, Cooking 4. We get to taste the food, which is usually delicious!
We also support a similar photography competition.
We arrange for children from Culverhill School, Yate to join about 700 other youngsters, with a variety of learning challenges, from our Rotary District, to go to Cattle Country Park for a day of fun.
Over 30 children, accompanied by school staff and Rotarians, enjoy the day jumping, bouncing, running, having lunch and then doing it all again! This is truly what Rotary is about.
We also donate to many worthwhile youth causes, with recent examples including:
Primary school reading books, netball kit and playground equipment
Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and Air Cadets equipment and events
Youth Rugby and Football Clubs kit
Books for the Hosanna Primary School in Kampala, Uganda
Brimsham Green School visit to Uganda to help school children
Secondary School Equipment and Projects
Chipping Sodbury Festival Week youth events
