Cliff Puffett, a Community Governor of Horizon Community College, was joined by Jackie Smith, CEO and Head Teacher of Uplands Educational Trust.

Uplands School is for pupils up to the age of 19 with learning difficulties. Jackie said: “Our young people learn later and slower and we haven’t finished educating them at 19.” To avoid them “falling off a cliff at 19 years of age” Horizon Community College has been established. A part of the Uplands Educational Trust it has sites in Stratton Road and Headlands. There are now 55 young people attending it and all will leave with the ability to hold part-time jobs for 30 years or more. The College’s mission statement is: “Empowering learners to shape their futures”. It’s holding a year of bikeathon challenges to raise £30,000 to purchase a new minibus having the Rotary logo prominently displayed. A minibus will mean that learners will be able to access both of the college sites, attend work placements, holiday clubs and be able to socialise with their peers. The next bikeathon challenge is on 28th September at Sainsburys in Gablecross
