Joan Goldsmith is visiting all Rotary Clubs in the District during her year as District Governor.
She started by telling us of her background and starting her working life as an infant’s school teacher. With the Open University she obtained a degree in Psychology. She then worked with YTS students with “difficulties” and with the Probation Service for 15 years working with young offenders. She has lived, due to her husband’s job, in most parts of the country settling in Gloucestershire.
Joan has filled the role of County Commissioner for Scouts in Gloucester. She said that she feels there is similarity in the “philosophy” between the Scouts and Rotary.
Some years ago, Joan was invited to the newly formed Nailsworth Rotary Club and quickly became a member. Her husband is also a Rotarian – but not in the same Club as Joan!!
Joan told us that the Rotary National Conference is now finished and will be replaced by a Rotary Showcase – the first one taking place in Nottingham. The aim of this Showcase is Rotary looking out to people rather than looking in. Members of the public can attend the Showcase. The finals of Youth Speaks will take place at the Showcase. The District Conference will have at least one part looking out.
Joan stressed that she feels the way forward to Rotary is through youth
