Homestart provides support and friendship to families in the Aberdeen area with children under 5yrs who are experiencing difficulties. Gette explained that families are referred due to ill health, isolation, limited parenting skills etc. Referrals are made by Social Workers, Educational Psychologists or in some cases the family makes direct contact.
The Association was started 41years ago in Leicester and is now working with families across the Globe.
Gette has worked with Homestart for 14 years and she gave a most informative presentation, highlighting their progress to date i.e. support up to 200 families in Aberdeen, which equates to some 500 children.
Their main aim is to help families help themselves through volunteers going in to the family home and assisting with dietary needs, parenting skills or just general support where needed.
From their Mastrick office a team of 9 operate the largest scheme of the charity in Scotland.
They are self -funding and like a number of charities have a successful charity shop in George Street.
More information can be found on Facebook and Twitter.
