Dr Klaus John - A Hospital in Peru

Raffle : Norman Watson

Reception : Gordon McInally / Stewart Hutchison

On Thursday 19th March, members and guests of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry enjoyed one of the most inspirational presentations of recent years. German doctors Klaus John and his wife Martina have devoted their lives to establishing, funding and supporting a hospital in one of the most remote districts of Peru where the indigenous people, descendants of the Incas, have suffered centuries of poverty and discrimination. Driven by a strong Christian faith, the Johns worked tirelessly to raise capital to build and equip their hospital, delivering more than 2,000 presentations in 19 countries around the world and securing pledges of financial support and donations of equipment from individuals, companies and organisations. In May 2005 the first stone was laid. The opening of the hospital in 2007 was a national event, the First Lady of Peru  calling it 'a cathedral of love'. Named Diospi Suyana - meaning We Trust in God - the hospital is staffed by 50 medical missionaries supported by 110 Peruvian colleagues. It is non-denominational, however, and accepts patients of all creeds and none. To combat the widespread illiteracy in the region, the Johns also established a school for 600 pupils and a network of Kids Clubs for children whose family circumstances meant they had few opportunities to develop socially. In proposing the vote of thanks, Rotarian Stewart Hutchison said the Johns' story showed remarkable commitment, humanity and above all faith. Dr Klaus John was introduced by President Elect Kate Gibb. The meeting was chaired by President Charles Fletcher.
