Roddy gave a very thoughtful address to the members. He had visited 3 clubs during the previous 24 hours and he had been especially impressed by the Buckhaven and Methil Club, a new club of 24 members in a not especially affluent area. Their activities impacted on the less well off sections of their community with support for Food Banks, Clothing Banks and emergency food provisions.
He said that Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), a Rotary International programme which offers young people an opportunity to participate in a programme of physical and intellectual activitieshad been the subject of scrutiny and report. The evaluation gave it an “Excellent“ grade for young people. He had visited both the girls and boys camps ay Nethy Bridge and had been impressed with the enthusiasm on display.
For 2016/2017 Roddy has coined for District 1010 the theme “It is what we do that matters “.
He identified three main priorities this year:
1 Continued support for “The End Polio Now” campaign which had seen a 99% reduction in reported cases and 2.5 billion children immunised.
2 Support Rotary Foundation (Rotarys own charity) where great projects had been carried out both at home and abroad. Rotary Foundation had recently been awarded “The most outstanding foundation in America”.
3 To get younger members to join Rotary. He believed the social networks were the way ahead as he found young people no longer read newspapers. There is a challenge to get people of varying backgrounds interested and active in the movement.
He believed in change but in keeping the tradition of “Service“.
Club president Brian thanked Roddy for an interesting address and sent greetings to their home club.
