Visit of DG Beryl Cotton

A call on North Wales oldest Rotary club to leave no opportunity unexplored in its urgent quest to attract new members was made by District Governor Beryl Cotton on her official annual visit to the Rhyl club at Faenol Fawr. Welcomed and introduced by President Keith Roberts, Mrs Cotton said she was confident that with determination and ingenuity this vital challenge could be surmounted and the flame of Rotary kept alive to the benefit of the numerous charities, individuals and worthy local and national good causes involving the wider Rhyl community. Addressing members on the universal priority of drawing in new young persons, men and women, into Rotary, she said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the way the Rhyl club was effectively operating and praised its proud record since its foundation 91 years ago. “We must all face up to the changed situation by working together to ensure that the long legacy of Rotary is maintained, but it will require a readiness to explore every means possible of opening the way for people to experience and enjoy the enormous fun and fellowship that Rotary provides,” she added. She also commended the invaluable global work being done through Rotary’s own charity Rotary Foundation, notably in helping eradicate polio from the face of the earth, and assisting the many destitute millions whose lives were shattered by disasters, earthquakes and acts of barbaric terrorism around the world. The District Governor was warmly thanked by President Keith for her ready support and encouragement and promised that her sound message and constructive advice would be positively followed up and acted on in the year ahead. Earlier members were told by Community Service chairman Hari Hughes that four elderly persons from the Rhyl area were currently enjoying a free gentlemens’ holiday provided by the club with a second such holiday planned in the spring.
