Rotary Young Chef Competition 2017
Young chefs display their skills
Cirencester Rotary Club were delighted to host this year's local Rotary Young Chef Competition at Deer Park School on Tuesday 7th November. Rotary promotes the competition nationally to develop cookery and organisational skills in young people aged 11 to 17 years.
The four local finalists were Grace Southgate, Sam Delaine, Ella Bullock and Alex Day, all from Deer Park School. Guest judges were Ronnie Bonetti, food Director of The Lucky Onion Group (who own The Wild Duck at Ewen), and Anne Lumb, retired Food Technology teacher. Both judges agreed that the standard of cooking and quality of the food was exceptional.
The finalists put a great deal of thought and effort into their menus. They worked hard under the pressure of constant monitoring and occasional discussion of their content and technique along with the time pressure of an overall two-hour limit. Grace Southgate, whose menu included a crab mayonnaise starter and duck main course, was the winner on the day and will now go on to represent the club and her school in the District final early in the New Year.
Local Rotarian Mark Wilton said, “This annual competition is a great opportunity to help develop the skills and talents of young people. Our congratulations go to all finalists and I want to thank our judges Ronnie Bonetti and Anne Lumb, Louise Parker Food Technology teacher for her support and Deer Park School for the use of their facilities."
