Talk by Rtn Geraint Griffith

A call on all members to ensure maximum support for the club’s 92nd Charter Night celebrations next month was made by President Keith Roberts at a meeting at Faenol Fawr. Confirming that the event would take place for the first time at the Tweedmill restaurant on Friday May 18, the President said he was looking for a bumper attendance for what promised to be one of the most significant occasions in the club’s year. After congratulating social secretary Mike Howarth on organising an outstandingly enjoyable return visit to Bangor-on-Dee Races the previous Saturday, the President warmly introduced Past President and widely acclaimed eminent former varsity lecturer, Geraint Griffith, the speaker for the evening. His skilfully crafted talk, unavoidably deferred from its originally scheduled date to mark St David’s Day, produced a predictable tour de force, cleverly woven around the name David. Selecting his personally most admired trio of Davids, including world renowned tenor David Lloyd, born in Trelogan, he also singled out his family connection with the distinguished architect Professor Dewi-Prys Thomas, who designed the Gwynedd County headquarters, perfectly reflecting its proximity and relationship with the majestic and imposing nearby Caernarfon Castle. The trio was completed by the creation of Ysgol Dewi Sant in Rhyl, whose past pupils included his own two daughters taught through the medium of Welsh, later joined by the historic breakthrough Ysgol Glan Clwyd at St Asaph. All three of his choices, he maintained, were more than qualified to count among the greats of Wales, not to mention the towering British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George who merited a talk of its own. The appreciative thanks of the club for such a fascinating talk were enthusiastically expressed by past President Hari Hughes. The next meeting of the club will take place at Faenol Fawr with a Business & Fellowship gathering on Tuesday May 8.
