Rhyl

The celebration of the 92nd Charter Night anniversary of the founding of the Rhyl Club held at the Tweedmill restaurant, was marked with the award of a coveted Paul Harris Fellowship – the highest honour Rotary can confer – to past President Gareth Wynne Jones. The presentation was made by incoming District Governor Bob Maskall of Bangor after host club President Keith Roberts had described recipient Gareth, a senior Rhyl-based solicitor, as a true pillar of the club and a thoroughly deserving addition to this distinguished company of Fellows. As well as twice holding the office of President, he said Gareth had served the club with both enthusiasm and dependability throughout his long and distinguished membership in a wide variety of key roles. Responding, Gareth said this notable honour had come as a complete surprise and was one he accepted with both pride and humility, and would be much cherished. Congratulating the Rhyl club – the oldest in North Wales – on having reached the notable landmark of 92 years fantastic service to both the local community and the world-wide Rotary creed of Service Above Self, Bob Maskall said he hoped Rhyl would continue to make its outstanding contribution for very many years to come. President Keith Roberts, in welcoming the 75 members and guests, representing clubs and organisations over a wide area of North Wales, said the next important target for Rhyl was indeed to ensure they reached the magical century mark, now only eight years away. Praising the club’s dedicated officials and members, he said Rhyl members had again raised a large sum of money to aid a range of charities and worthy causes during his year in office and he was certain they would remain ready to respond to the increasing challenges and opportunities to add to their enviable record. Thanking Tweedmill and their efficient and unfailingly helpful staff for their ready co-operation in ensuring such a successful and enjoyable Charter Night event, he said the evening had also yielded hundreds of pounds to again support deserving causes, including the drive to eradicate polio from the face of the earth and more locally to support the wonderful work of the Ty Gobaith children’s hospice.
