Philantrophy Award
This year Wallace High School held its first Young Philantrophist Initiative competition. The competition was open to pupils in S3, of whom over 150 took part. Pupils formed teams that initially undertook research into various social issues, with the aim of selecting and then promoting the contributions made by local charities of their choice. The teams then made presentations to the judges, competing to gain the first prize of £3000 that goes to the charity selected by the winning team. The prize money was provided by the Wood Foundation, established by Sir Ian Wood and his immediate family in 2007 to address some of society’s greatest inequalities and issues.
Eight teams reached the final stage of the competition. Having watched the presentations, the judges determined that there were two teams that they considered were outstanding. Inevitably, there could only be one winner of the £3000 first prize; however, Peter Williams from the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane, who was one of the judges, was extremely impressed by the quality of the presentation by the runners-up. Having consulted with members of the Rotary Club Council, it was agreed that the Club would offer a prize of £500 to the second placed team. The team then presented a cheque for this amount to Beth Craig from their chosen charity, Stirling Women´s Aid, which provides refuge, information and support services for women, children and young people in the Stirlingshire area who are victims of domestic abuse.
