End Polio Now Collection - Tesco

Monday 24th October was World Polio Day when Rotary members around the world marked the progress made by The World Health Organisation, Rotary, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and local partners to eradicate polio.

2022 has been a difficult and turbulent year, with evidence of polio where it has not been seen for years. Poliovirus was even detected in the London sewers.

A global background of increased armed conflict, environmental disasters such as drought and flooding and the continuing efforts to combat Covid 19 have added to the challenge faced by humanitarian organisations.

This week, Rotary was part of a historic financial pledge at the World Health Summit in Berlin. Governments, NGOs and donors committed $2.6 billion worth of funding towards polio eradication efforts. The funding, which included $150 million from Rotary, will protect 370 million children per year over the next five years in over fifty countries.

President Sandy Mackenzie and everyone at Rotary wish to thank everyone who has contributed so generously to the Rotary End Polio Now collection at Tesco.

The collection raised a total of £865.51 which will be double-matched by Bill Gates.
