A Serious Misfortune Has Occurred:
The Bradford Lozenge Poisonings of 1858. In the dreadful 'Bradford Lozenge Poisonings' incident of 1858, over 20 people were killed and more than 200 made seriously ill by eating peppermint lozenges adulterated with arsenic, bought from a market trader. It was common practice to replace a proportion of sugar with a cheaper alternative such as plaster of Paris, but in this instance the wrong substance had been supplied. How and why this was possible is explained in this tale of fatal negligence and inadequate legislation.
