Celebrating Recovery Through Cycling

HCRC presents recumbent tricycle to brain injury survivors in Hereford

Hereford City Rotary Club were thrilled to be able to fund a Van Raam recumbent trike for the Adaptive Cycling Group in Hereford headed up by Dr Jack Jarman and supported by Alex Haines, Manager at Halo who is also a very keen cyclist.

Members of the club, David and Ron visited the cycling group for the official handover of the trike and enjoyed meeting members of the NHS medical team including Bob Schermer who was running one of their regular sessions with service users.

The trike will help service users with acquired brain injuries, who are often survivors of stroke. Its unique design reduces the burden on the back, neck, shoulders and wrists of riders. That coupled with a frame suspension that offers extra comfort and an adjustable seat height and angle, it allows as many service users with a disability to enjoy it as possible.

Rotarians David and Ron spoke with Aidan, one of those service users, who described the experience of using the trike as a 'lifeline' and 'the highlight of his week'. What amazing praise indeed!

The NHS medical team thanked Hereford City Rotary Club for collaborating on the project and funding the trike's purchase and emphasised the considerable benefits service users will gain from being active and having the opportunity to cycle again.

It is always an absolute pleasure to help improve the lives of people living within our communities and we look forward to popping back over the next few months to see how everyone is getting on.

Hereford’s new 1km closed road traffic free cycle track opened on Saturday 23rd September offering cyclists of all ages and abilities the chance to learn to ride, train at every level, and enjoy their sport without having to negotiate busy roads. Sessions are offered for individuals and families as well as club/group and supervised sessions. There is no need to pre-book just turn-up-and-ride!
