Club Meeting: Amy Casey - Ashford Borough Council

Mon, Jan 14th 2019 at 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Amy Casey - Ashford Borough Council

President Peter Gammon introduced our speaker, Amy Casey, Environmental Officer at Ashford Borough Council since April 2018. Amy said she was still getting to know Ashford and her remit was very diverse. She gave us pleasing statistics showing that Ashford had risen from being the worst recycling Council in the Country and Ashford is now rising up the ranks rapidly as part of the Mid Kent Joint Management Solutions.

Amy showed us photographs of the incorrect contents of some residents’ recycling bins, nappies being the worst problem. She went through how the contents of the green recycling bins, grey waste bins, food caddies and optional brown garden waste bins were treated. Of particular interest was the separation of the mixture of recyclable waste into different types of useable waste.

There are new initiatives this year such as tree planting, litter picking (common place for years in the rural areas), water bottle filling station in town and the coffee pod collection at the Civic Centre. She patiently answered our questions and left some samples of recycled goods and helpful ‘what can I recycle’ wheels.

We now have no excuse for putting our waste in the wrong bins!
