President Robin Taylor introduced our Speaker Carl Gould from Ashford First Responders. Carl is a
Team Leader and is employed by South East Coast Ambulance Service.
The First Responders are unpaid volunteers and are despatched by 999 control to provide care until an ambulance arrives. They will take the patients medical history so that when the ambulance arrives they can give the appropriate care.
First Responders use their own vehicles to travel to an emergency. Training is provided by SECAM but the kit has to be purchased and they rely on donations. As from next year CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) will be introduced into the school curriculum.
At present Carl is the only First Responder in the Ashford area but there will be four more coming on boardover the next few months.
Carl showed us the kit he has to carry including a defibrillator. He told us that the defibrillator costs £1000 and the rest of the kit £300. There followed a question and answer session.
Maggie Reuther gave the vote of thanks. President Robin then presented Carl with a cheque for £500 from the Club.
