President Robin Taylor introduce our speaker, Sam Amphlett from the Macular Society. Sam is a fundraiser for the Macular Society in the South East. In fact she is the only one in the country.
The Macular Society receives no Government Funding and relies on Lottery Grants, bequests, donations from Trusts, and donations from members, the public and charities.
The money raised is used to fund research and support for sufferers from Macular. Sam said there are some videos on Utube and the Macular website giving more information (www.macularsociety.org/what-macula).
Over 300 people per day are diagnosed with Macular. 1 in 200 sufferers are over 60. By aged 90 it is 1 in 4 people. There is no known cure for the condition but nutrition and diet can help.
The nearest support group is in Tenterden and offers counselling, a helpline, a befriending service and aids
to help cope with the condition.
Stuart McRae gave the vote of thanks and Robin gave Sam a donation from the club.
