Journalist and club member Simon Baldwin gave a talk to St Andrews Kilrymont Rotary Club on Making the News.
Simon asked, what is news? and gave various examples.
He outlined the history of news from Chinese annals in the 8th century BC through to Roman and Greek messengers, the Japanese "postal service" runners and the banditore in Italy.
The first newspapers were produced in 1605 in Germany and then came news dissemination via wire services in the 19th century. He said the news of US president Lincoln's assassination took 12 days to reach Britain.
By 1903 the circumtelegraphy of the globe was achieved.
Later came news reporting via the radio and subsequently television. Now the Internet is the most powerful tool for news broadcasting.
Following his most informative and thought-provoking talk, he answered various questions from the audience.
Grace Morris proposed thanks.
