Speakers John Bowskill and Thomas Checko. Host Mike Hirst

Tue, Jan 17th 2017 at 12:45 pm - 2:30 pm

Rotarians John and Thomas visited to update us on the very worthy Celebration of Engineering Project that Sunderland Rotary wishes to promote.

Rotarian Thomas, who is himself and engineer, gave us an outline of the Engineering Exhibition by local companies that Sunderland Rotary is sponsoring at the Stadium of Light on 3rd and 4th October 2017.

He began his powerpoint by showing many of the skilled engineering companies that are already operating in the north east.  There is a problem with a lack of engineers arising from a perception of a lack of opportunity to progress in the profession.

The purpose of the exhibition is to educate, inspire and inform young people in primary and secondary schools, their parents and teachers about the wonderful opportunites there are in the profession, which is not perceived as a good career.

There will be an exhibition of manufactured goods, eminent speakers, a quiz, break out sessions covering different aspects, a description of the various ways in which one can become an engineer and and Information Pack to take away.

In the evening, there will be an event aimed specifically at teachers, whom it is thought tend to direct youngsters to more traditional occupations and degree courses.

Altogether, a very interesting and informative presentation, which our club is very ready to support.
