Best for Ben

Thu, Jul 20th 2017 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The speakers from the Best for Ben Charity's Committee gave us an overview of this recent very successful campaign to get Ben back into his home in Avening following his traumatic accident over one year ago.

Summary of presentation on 20th July 2017

Speakers from Best For Ben: Verity Constable and Matt Kilyon

Ben’s accident while on a holiday in April 2016 was life changing for him and his family. The Best For Ben charity was set up soon after the accident to raise funds to pay for perceived requirements so that Ben could return home after spending a long time in hospital, and to provide appropriate surroundings for him to be fully involved in all aspects of family life once more.

The charity has received widespread support for its many and varied fund-raising events. The funds raised enabled substantial groundwork to be done at Ben’s family home in Avening that in turn persuaded BBC’s DIY SOS “The Big Build” to accept this as a worthwhile project to document.

The project involved a considerable amount of reconfiguring of the house and garden, and the building of an extension, and a team of well over 100 builders and finishers donated their time and expertise to complete what would normally be expected to take several months in just over one week. The project was filmed by BBC and is expected to be broadcast later this year. There was wonderful local support for the family and the project, and we all look forward to watching the film when it is complete.

There were suggestions made during the presentation on ways in which Nailsworth Rotary Club could provide support to Ben and his family over the next year. We look forward to continuing to support them.
