Dinner and Samaritans speaker at the Baron

Wed, Jul 24th 2019 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Tonight we welcomed Jack Ruby to tell us about the Samaritans.

Jack was a very interesting speaker as he explained the role of the Samaritans in supporting those in crisis. The Samaritans was set up in 1953 by Chad Varah who had witnessed the suicide of a 14-year-old girl when he was a vicar in Lincoln. On the Samaritans website they say" We're working together to make sure fewer people die by suicide. Every 6 seconds we respond to a call for help. No judgement. No pressure. We're here for anyone who needs someone". Jack explained how he volunteers for the charity at the Llandrindod Wells branch and explained the guidelines he operates under. He emphasised that he cannot give advice directly but can support the caller ( or visitor) as they work their way through the fog that surrounds them. It was very enlightening to hear brief examples of the anonymous phone calls and to hear how the Llandod branch works in a practical sense. We were very pleased support the Samaritans work and to give Jack £50 for the charity. On another tack, we were pleased to welcome Giles ( a Rotarian from  ) and his wife Liz and hope to see them again as they have a farm near Norton. The photo is of President Chris presenting our banner to Giles.
