Local solicitor, Mary Crighton, has been elected as the first female president of the Rotary Club of Dundee.

Local solicitor, Mary Crighton, has been elected as the first female president of the Rotary Club of Dundee.

Outgoing president Gavin Strachan passed the Chain of Office to Mary at the club’s weekly lunchtime meeting held at the Invercarse Hotel on Thursday 27th June.

Mary was born in Dundee and attended school at Lawside Academy.  She went on to study law at the University of Dundee and following a legal apprenticeship became an assistant with the then firm of  D R Calder and Williams (now Calders).  She is currently the senior partner of Calders, 10 Whitehall Street, Dundee.

In her spare time Mary enjoys music and theatre and is a member of the Cecilian Choir in Dundee. She also has a great interest in Robert Burns and enjoys speaking at Burns Suppers.

Mary is particularly keen to see the club support the Rotary Young Musician competition over the coming year, giving pupils from local secondary schools an opportunity to perform at both a local and national level.

As a member of the Rotary Club of Dundee for seven years Mary has served as Chair of the Community Service Committee and as a member of the Club Council.

Outgoing president Gavin Strachan said, “I am delighted to pass the baton onto Mary who will very capably lead the club into its 99th year. Mary will bring a great deal of experience, wisdom and dedication to the role as we look towards our centenary anniversary.”

Mary said, “I am appreciative of the honour that Rotary Club of Dundee has bestowed on me as the first female president and I will certainly endeavour to justify their confidence in me.“

The Rotary Club of Dundee was established in 1920. It is part of a worldwide network with a mission to serve others and bring positive change by helping to build strong communities. The club raises thousands of pounds every year through its annual Charity Dinner, Oktoberfest Beer & Music Festival and Swimarathon event. As well as providing financial support, members also give hands-on practical assistance and advice to local projects.
