A GREAT, SOGGY TIME!
Sunday, 10 September saw the Rotary Club of Rushden’s International Committee hold a Jazz & BBQ Spectacular in the lovely grounds of Jill & Graham West’s residence in Harrold. We were entertained by NMPAT’s County Jazz 2 and local group Cool Jazz. The event raised £1,300 for the charity WaterAid.
So popular was the afternoon that the wind and rain decided to join in, dampening most of the attendees, but not their spirits and the sunshine that followed ensured that everyone had a great time.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE
Rotary is International, made up of a worldwide network of 1.4 million neighbours, friends, leaders, andproblem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary's people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end.
Here at the Rotary Club of Rushden, not only do we work to help, support, improve and join in with our local community, but we also look to see how we can help others across the world.
In the last Rotary year (1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023) we reacted immediately to the Ukrainian crisis, donating £1,440 to help the Ukrainian refugees who made their way to the Polish border. We were able to channel this money through a Polish Rotary Club close to the border crossing, so we know that all the money raised was utilised without deduction to help those in need.
In addition, we supported, through our fundraising events, Mercy Ships, Médecins Sans Frontières and Bansang Hospital in Gambia, raising a further £3,568.61, as well as donating £160 to Rotary’s End Polio Now appeal.
A further initiative was to collect used and unwanted spectacles and send them via Rotary York Ainsty Club to Africa, where they can be made available to people otherwise would have no access to the glasses which we take for granted.
This Rotary year sees us hoping to support WaterAid, providing clean water in areas where disease is spread through contaminated or no water, and Smile Train which provides cleft palate surgery to babies born with this disfiguring condition which would otherwise result in them being ostracised by their local community. We will also look to react to other needs as they surface.
Our first fundraising event is a Jazz Spectacular & BBQ starting at 1 pm on Sunday, 10 September in a lovely garden setting in Harrold, North Bedfordshire. We are delighted to have the Northamptonshire County Youth Big Band and all profits will go to WaterAid. Tickets (£20) and full details can be obtained from 01933 313456 or email: remcsm@gmail.com
None of this could happen without the undoubted energy and enthusiasm of our International Committee and I would like to pay tribute to last year’s Committee members and especially Glenis Haynes, my predecessor as Committee Chairman.
