Tips for Safer Driving No.4

What to do if you’re being tailgated?

Older Drivers Forum for Gloucestershire is Nailsworth Rotary’s commitment to the community to lobby and bring awareness around older drivers and vulnerable road users. Each month we will give you tips on how to keep safe on our rural roads of Glos. This month’s tip is What to do if you’re being tailgated?”

Being tailgated can be so annoying; you may speed up to shake the tailgater off and potentially lose control causing an accident, or brake sharply to teach them a lesson and get rear-ended. So, here are the basic rules on how to deal with a tailgater properly:

  1. Stay calm: The worst thing you can do in this situation is get worked up. Bad for you, bad for your driving.
  2. Don’t increase your speed: I know this can be tempting. Its worth slowing down on a straight piece of road to encourage the tailgater to overtake.
  3. Pull over: If that didn’t work, and only if it safe to do, pull over and let the vehicle pass, making sure you have indicated first.
  4. Fit a rear dashcam: This is one we like but only if money allows. Drivers who think they may be on camera tend to keep well back.

Way back in November we let you into the best kept secret of DVLA, that the Highway Code was changing. On 29th January 2022 the changes became law, but sadly they did not let the printers know, so the publishing date will be 25th April 2022. However it is now availabnle true its available online and via an App, and here is a link:  to exactly what has changed.

Next month the nitty gritty problem is "When did you last have your eyes tested and why this is so important?"
