Club Meeting in Waitrose Community Room

Thu, Mar 9th 2023 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Guest speaker is Katie Bell who has volunteered to work in a poor community in Malawi (one of the poorest African countries) for 12 months from August 2023 as a primary school teacher.

Katie is in her final year of school in Glasgow and has been offered a place to volunteer in a poor community in Malawi for 12 months from August 2023 as a primary school teacher where she will be teaching a range of subjects including English, Art and Science.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa and has strong historical links to Scotland through the travels and missionary work of Dr David Livingston. This will be a unique experience for her, living and working in a very different community, as well as helping children who are less fortunate than herself by assisting in their education.  She is hoping that by the end of her time working in Malawi she will have become more independent and appreciative of the life she has in Scotland and more aware of the difficulties faced by people living in poorer communities.

She is volunteering with the educational charity Project Trust (Registered as a Charity in Scotland No. SC025668).  Project Trust is a registered company and their latest audited accounts can be viewed online at Company House on GOV.UK and searching for company number SC170673. Project Trust is one of the original charities specializing in long-term volunteering placements and has been operating for the past 50 years. The Trust has a strong commitment to safety, development, and training of their international volunteers and I feel privileged to join this organisation. They have projects in Asia, Africa and Latin America where volunteers teach secondary and primary school students as well as social care and youth work.  Project Trust

To take up her placement she needs to fundraise £6,950.  This sum covers return flights from London to Malawi, accommodation, living allowance, medical insurance and any immigration costs (visas, permits & ID cards). Her fund raising plans includes, but not restricted to the 3 Peak challenge as a sponsored event - climbing the 3 highest peaks in the Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike) and Wales (Snowdon) within 24 hours, bake sales and kilt walk.

Allander Rotary have contributed to her fund raising and as well as hearing of her plans at thsi meeting and wishing her well we hope to hear from her again on her return.
