Speaker: Graeme McKerrell. Subject: Thoughts of a new Judge.

Graeme McKerrell was born and brought up in Scotland until he was 10 years of age when his family moved to England.

He was educated at Ewell Castle School, Surrey and later read law at Kingston University. This was followed by him undertaking the Law Society's Finals course at the College of Law, Guildford.

He undertook articles of clerkship with a medium sized firm in Aldershot where he practised as a solicitor for a period of time after formal qualification specialising in family and domestic proceedings.  As a consequence he would regularly appear in both Magistrate and County Courts across Hampshire and Surrey.

In 1986 he joined Sussex Police Prosecutions Department and later transferred to the newly formed Crown Prosecution Service.  After four years in Sussex (including a five month secondment to CPS HQ in London to prosecute cases arising from the "Poll Tax" riots in 1990) he transferred permanently to CPS HQ, where for two years he headed the Recruitment Branch and thereafter worked within the Operations Group helping to develop national standards and procedures.  In 1994 he became the Branch Crown Prosecutor for Brighton and was later appointed The Crown Prosecutor for Sussex.

In 1997 Graeme McKerrell was recruited as a criminal specialist within the Chambers of the Law Officers of the Crown in Guernsey.  Following completion of the Guernsey Bar examinations and after obtaining a Certificate d'Etudes Juridiques Francaises et Normandes at the University of Caen he was admitted as an Advocate of the Royal Court in 2001. He was appointed a Crown Advocate the following year.  In 2005 he became Director of Criminal Prosecutions and a Contrôle Délégué in 2006.

In 2015 he was appointed as a Judge of the Magistrate's Court and as a Lieutenant Bailiff.
