Our speaker on Monday 12th October was Ruth Andoh-Baxter who came to tell us more about Sense, a charity for deaf blind children and adults. To lose one's sight or hearing is difficult enough but living with a combination of little or no sight or hearing is, of course, immensely challenging not only for the individual but also for family.
For children who are born with vision and hearing impairments, learning about the world around them, finding a way to communicate, and learning to trust people can be extremely difficult. With an ageing population the number of adults affected is inevitably on the increase and learning to cope with these new circumstances is obviously vitally important.
Sense has worked with deaf blind people for over 50 years and offers specialist services such as housing, educational, employment and leisure opportunities that are built around each individual's needs and preferences.
We were incredibly moved by Ruth's talk and hope to offer support to the charity in the future. It was also good to find out that Ruth is a member of the Rotary Club of Dorking Deepdene. The vote of thanks was given by Peter Lockyer, seen in the picture here with Ruth and Club President Barry Buttenshaw.
