Speaker: Owen Eggington - Operation Haddock

Owen Eggington is a member of The Rotary Club of Farnborough and a war historian. When he came to the club on Monday to tell us about "Operation Haddock" he started by explaining that his interests were not the mainstream parts of World War 2 history (which had been covered by many others) but in the lesser known incidents.
Operation Haddock was one of these. It was the codename for a 1940 British plan to support their French allies in the event of Italy joining the war. It was a fascinating story which highlighted the indecisiveness and reluctance of the French who feared retaliation and which resulted in the plan achieving very little.
With the benefit of hindsight we were left feeling sympathy for Group Captain Field who was in command of the force in Southern France and appears to have done his best despite many conflicting orders from the English and French military. This was a second visit from Owen who is always interesting and we look forward to hearing from him on another subject on some future occasion.
