Speaker: Jackie Wileman, Lifelites.

This week we were joined by Jackie Wileman who came to tell us about a charity we had not heard of before.

Lifelites is a very unique charity which provides specialist entertainment, educational and assistive technology packages that give children in hospices the chance to learn and play, and to be creative, communicate and control something for themselves.

Lifelites currently supports 9,000 children and young people who have life limiting, life threatening and disabling conditions. Their aim is to provide one of these technology packages in every baby and children’s hospice across the British Isles. The hospices have to make a formal application for a package but do not contribute a penny towards it as all of Lifelites’ work is funded solely by donations.

Jackie gave us examples of the types of equipment that can be supplied and these range from indestructible covers for iPads to interactive electronic magic carpets. There is a wide range of specialist and innovative aids available and new technologies are being developed all the time.

The equipment, ongoing technical support and training at each hospice costs around £50,000 over four years and so fundraising is very crucial to their work. There are a variety of ways that funds can be raised.
We were impressed by what is being achieved and we will look at giving supporting and recommending consideration by other Rotary clubs.

Further information on the charity can be found at http://www.lifelites.org
