GUEST EVENING Our Annual Burns Supper

Wed, Jan 27th 2016 at 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

President Peter welcomed some 55 members, partners and guests to our Club's Burns Supper at Kingsknowe Golf Club. He then handed over to Allan Maclaughlan who, ably supported by piper Martin Duncan, commenced the evening's entertainment by addressing the Haggis in his own inimitable fashion.

David Cormack's rendition of the Selkirk Grace preceded (almost) a hearty bill o' fare including haggis, neeps and tatties followed by steak pie and scads of cheese and biscuits.

After dinner we experienced a feast of Burns commencing with Lindsay Craig's Immortal Memory where he spoke warmly of Burn's love of women, nature and life, followed by Roy Stirrat's Toast Tae the Lassies and Sheila Wilson's Reply from the Lassies. The hidden depth of talent within our Club was further demonstrated by excellent recitations from Kay Latimer (A Ken Wha Ye Mean) and Derek Douglas (Willie Wassle).

Good Burns Suppers are not complete without the singing of songs of Burns and compere Allan gave a warm welcome to a group of friends and worthies, collectively named Shiltron, who captivated the audience with their interpretation of A Man's a Man for a' That, Comin thro' the Rye, Scots Wha Hae and other Burns songs.

Jim West gave a sincere vote of thanks to all who contributed to an emotional evening of music, verse and song and he brought the proceedings to an end by leading the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
