Sonia Valcarcel  who is The Regional Partnerships Executive for Visit Scotland originally came from Madrid in Spain (but who has now settled in Scotland and considers Edinburgh to be home) gave us a talk on Visit Scotland.
Sonia highlighted the importance of tourism to Scotland and Edinburgh. For every £1 invested £20 is generated in the area. Tourism also provides 270,000 jobs in Scotland and 35,000 jobs in Edinburgh. Where there are tourists it has been shown that the economy benefits transport, local suppliers and the  professional services of accountants, lawyers, IT Services and local attractions.
Edinburgh and the Lothians gets visitors from all around the world including USA, Germany, France, Australia, Netherlands, Canada, Spain, Ireland, Norway and Poland (in that order).
The core purpose of the organisation “Is to grow and develop Scotland’s visitor economy sustainably through our core activity of marketing and events and by working in partnership with businesses and communities”.  They achieve this by organising business events, developing the Events Industry and Event Scotland.
They have a huge digital marketing programme which includes, iCentres, on line web sites and outreach programmes.  One of the outreach programmes involves 3 ‘Coo’ vans which go to events.  These vans are big brown hairy painted vans with large cow horns on the top. They are called Hamish, Morag and Archie.
The vote of thanks was given by Ken Lindsay
