Our speaker was Geraldine Gammell a non executive director of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. She is very passionate about this event. Tattoo is a Dutch word and is a call to bring soldiers back to barracks.
Brigadier David Allfrey is the Chief Executive and Producer of The Tattoo, The Princess Royal is the patron and they have 23 permanent staff. Many more temporary staff are employed around the time of the event. 2016 is the eighteenth consecutive annual sell-out run.
There were two successful tours to Wellington, New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia in February of this year. They were very nervous about this venture. However, it was a great success in terms of performance and profit. They were able to donate a million pounds to charity in 2016. They contributed £500,000 to eleven UK-based Services and Arts beneficiaries and an additional £500,000 to seven charitable causes in Australia and New Zealand. This is the largest charitable donation to date. In future they would like to take the Tattoo to the Gulf and to China but this would require the support of the UK government.
The Tattoo is in great shape and has vision for the future. Their ambition is to have a world class event. It has been said its purpose is championing unity and identity.
The club’s vote of thanks was given by Brian Buchanan.
