My J P Experiences - Ken Robertson

.

Ken outlined his early career in financial services before joining ACAS and from within that role his duties as a Justice of the Peace which he does part time by getting leave from his ACAS employment.
He spoke of the interesting history of the JP Service in Scotland, which dates back to 1609, predating much of Scotland’s current Legal Systems.
The JP Court deals with relatively minor offences such as driving offences, breach of the peace incidents and other low-grade offences and can impose fines up to £250 and/or 60 days internment.
He had to undergo a rigorous and thorough training over a period of 12 months before being allowed to take his seat as the “Beak with the suit” and was always nervous before the start of a day’s hearings.
He has a legal advisor available as he listens to the cases but the final decisions are his alone.
He finally entertained the members with a number of humorous stories about his cases before John Wilson asked the members to record their thanks for an informative and entertaining talk.
